Three Sisters, One Journey : Through Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh
14
Days
Step into the raw, untamed beauty of Northeast India — a land where the roads curve with the mountains, stories linger in the wind, and every turn reveals a world untouched by time.
This journey takes you through Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya — three of the Northeast’s most magical sisters. From the high-altitude passes of Tawang to the wild grasslands of Kaziranga, and finally into the mossy canyons and living root bridges of Meghalaya, each region offers a new rhythm, a new soul.
Expect mist-covered monasteries, thundering waterfalls, wild encounters with rhinos, tea-scented evenings, and moments of silence so deep they stay with you long after the trip ends.
A slow, meaningful escape into the soul of the Eastern Himalayas and the wild rhythms of Assam.
This isn’t just travel. It’s a slow unfolding — of landscapes, of cultures, and maybe even of something within yourself.
Itinerary
DAY 1
- Your ED Pilot will receive you at the Guwahati Airport or Railway Station. With warm greetings and packed bags, your journey into the Eastern Himalayas begins.
- The road to Shergaon winds gently from the bustle of Assam’s towns into the pine-covered hills of Arunachal Pradesh. The six-hour drive unfolds slowly, with shifting skies and forested curves.
- Pause en route for a hearty local lunch at a roadside dhaba. Expect simple, satisfying flavors and the warmth of Assamese hospitality.
- By late afternoon, you arrive in Shergaon. The village greets you with crisp air, the scent of pine, and quiet all around.
- Settle into a cozy homestay, and let the hush of the hills ease you into this new rhythm.
DAY 2
- Wake up to the scent of pine and golden light spilling across the landscape. After a simple breakfast, begin the drive to Mandala Top.
- Perched at nearly 10,000 feet, this sacred ridge is lined with 108 whitewashed stupas. Built by local families, they stand quietly against the sky as symbols of prayer and belonging.
- From Mandala, descend into the secluded Chug Valley. The village lies tucked into the folds of time, untouched and peaceful.
- Enjoy a thoughtfully curated lunch with the local community. Heirloom Monpa recipes are served in a village courtyard, prepared with indigenous ingredients and timeless care.
- After lunch, take a slow forest walk with a local guide. Listen to the woods, learn from the land, and take your time.
- By evening, continue to Dirang and check into your stay. Let the silence of the mountains cradle you into rest.
DAY 3
- After breakfast, begin the ascent toward Tawang. The drive climbs through breathtaking mountain landscapes and enters the high-altitude world of prayer flags and glacial lakes.
- Stop at Sela Pass, nearly 16,000 feet above sea level. Here, Sela Lake reflects the sky and the wind carries a reverent stillness.
- At the modest army café nearby, warm up with a cup of chai and light snacks.
- On the descent, take a break at Jung Falls. The waterfall thunders down a forested cliff, a moment of wild beauty in the journey.
- By evening, you reach Tawang. The town sits high and still, with monasteries and rooftops brushing the sky. Spend the evening at your pace. Wander into a quiet café or rest in the comfort of your room.
DAY 4
- Wake to a quiet morning in the mountains, where the scent of pine lingers in the air and soft light brushes across the rooftops of ancient monasteries.
- After breakfast, begin the journey toward the mystical high-altitude lakes that lie along the road to Bumla, near the Indo-China border.
- These alpine lakes are like skybound mirrors, scattered across ridgelines and reflecting more than just clouds. Some are known only in local stories, others caught briefly on film, yet none can be fully held in photographs or words.
- By late afternoon, return to Tawang. The evening is yours to enjoy. Spend time in a quiet hillside café, take a peaceful walk through prayer-flag-lined paths, or simply sit and watch the dusk settle gently over the town.
DAY 5
- Begin your morning with a visit to the revered Tawang Monastery—its golden roofs catching the early light, its ancient halls echoing with chants and centuries of devotion. This is not just a place—it is the very soul of Tawang.
- If your heart calls, we can explore a few more quiet corners of this highland town—monasteries, viewpoints, or cafes where time moves slower.
- After breakfast and morning tea, we begin our return to Dirang, gently descending from the high reaches of the Eastern Himalayas.
- Along the way, we pause at Chakzam Bridge—a 400-year-old iron suspension bridge built by a Tibetan monk. It stretches across a deep gorge, holding stories of faith and fortitude in every rusted joint.
- By evening, arrive in Dirang. We’ll visit its hilltop monastery, serene and wind-kissed. As the sun dips low and the sky glows amber, the prayer flags come alive in the breeze.
- Let the evening be slow and reflective. A quiet retreat in the valley cradles you once again in the arms of the mountains.
Day 6
- Begin the day with morning tea and breakfast in the cool mountain air.
- Afterward, descend from the highlands of Arunachal and journey toward a quiet tea estate near Kaziranga. The drive brings a gentle shift—from winding hills to the soft, open stretches of Assam’s plains.
- This boutique plantation stay offers a peaceful blend of heritage charm and curated experiences for tea lovers and curious travelers.
- It marks a soothing pause between the rugged rhythm of the mountains and the warmth of the lowlands.
- Spend the afternoon at leisure. Stroll through tea-lined trails, sip freshly brewed blends, or sit quietly under a tree and listen to the birds.
Day 7
- Today, we gently close the chapter on Arunachal and begin a new one as we enter the raw, untamed beauty of Assam.
- The drive to Kaziranga takes you through shifting landscapes, with spontaneous halts at scenic bends and quiet roadside towns.
- Along the way, stop for a hearty local lunch from our curated list of rustic dhabas and hidden food spots.
- By late afternoon, arrive at your lodge tucked near the edge of the forest.
- Let the evening move at its own pace. Sip chai, listen to the hum of forest life, and ease into the rhythm of the wild.
Day 8
- Rise with the sun and step into the wilderness with an early morning Elephant Safari in the Western Range. From atop your gentle companion, watch rhinos graze, deer dart through mist-laced grasslands, and the jungle slowly come to life.
- Return for a hearty breakfast and take time to freshen up.
- By mid-morning, set out on a Jeep Safari in the Central Range. Wetlands, elephant grass, and thick woods become the backdrop for sightings of wild buffaloes, swamp deer, and if luck is on your side, the elusive tiger.
- After your wild morning, slow things down with a cultural experience. Visit a local home to learn the art of traditional rice beer-making, followed by a tasting session.
- Sit down to a lovingly prepared Assamese lunch made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.
- Optional on request, head out again for a sunset Jeep Safari in the Western Range, when golden light filters through the trees and the jungle begins to stir again.
- Return to your stay and end the day with an intimate ethnic dinner hosted by a women-led self-help group. Let their food and stories offer you a soulful close to your time in Kaziranga.
Day 9
- Begin your day early, as the forest stirs with the first light.
- Optional Elephant Safari in the Western Range between 5:00 and 7:00 AM, offering an intimate glimpse of Kaziranga’s wildlife.

- Walk through the famously clean village of Mawlynnong and another lesser-visited, equally charming Khasi village nearby, where everyday life moves to the rhythm of nature.
